Lisa Kokin Biography

Lisa Kokin lives and works in El Sobrante, California with her spouse, the photographer Lia Roozendaal and Austin and Ollie, her canine studio assistants. The daughter of upholsterers, she stitches everything she can get her handon. Kokin brings a Fiber sensibility and a conceptual approach to a diverse array of materials, is ncluding textiles, paper, metal and shredded money. Her work is often a commentary on the world around her. Humor and empathy with the underdog are hallmarks of her art.

Kokin has been the recipient of multiple awards and commissions, including a Eureka Fellowship, a WESTAF/NEA Regional Fellowship, the Dorothy Saxe Invitational Award for Creativity in Contempor ary Arts from the Contemporary Jewish Museum, the Alameda County Arts Commission (multiple venues), and the Richmond Civic Center Public Art Interior Acquisitions Project. Her work is in numerous private and public collections, including the Boise Art Museum, the Buchenwald Memorial (Weimar-Buchenwald, Germany), the Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos (Santiago, Chile), the Smithsonian Institution, Northeastern University, the Yale University Art Museum, the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, the Crocker Art Museum, Johns Hopkins University, Princeton University, the Oakland Museum of California, Rutgers University, and many others
